Makala Pitman is a recent graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Communication Studies. Originally from Hickory, North Carolina, Makala first became interested in civics and youth voter development after her state representative ran unopposed for the 4th consecutive time. At UNC, she served as a NC Coordinated Campaign Campus Representative, leading campus organizing efforts including canvassing, protests, voter outreach, and political engagement initiatives.
Makala became involved with Let Us Lead during the 2025 Fellowship Cycle. After her cycle as a fellow, Makala stepped up as Lead Fellowship Coordinator at UNC and helped grow Let Us Lead’s North Carolina based operations to an additional school. From the end of 2025 and into 2026, Makala expanded Let Us Lead’s mission to 7 North Carolina schools and stepped up as Lead Senior Fellowship Coordinator and Director of Development.
Beyond her organizing work, Makala has gained extensive experience in Development and 501(c)(3) fundraising. She interned with Democracy North Carolina as a Development Intern and did extensive fundraising outreach in her role as Chief of Staff on the Ashley Bell for NC CD-10 Primary in 2026.
Now, Makala lives in Raleigh, NC and works as an OutVote Fellow and for Let Us Lead’s Development team. Outside of work, you can find Makala watching movies, going to concerts, doing puzzles, and thrifting with her friends!
